I have a customer that has a virtually non-functional AOL mailbox due to having more than 50,000 emails in it. Link

I was thinking of downloading everything into Outlook 2010 via POP just to clean it out and then have Outlook serve as his "archive of old emails" and then let him continue using his AOL for current/new emails.

How can I get the AOL SENT folder downloaded into Outlook?

Connect to AOL over IMAP with the SENT folder subscribed to, then you can move all messages from AOL SENT to Outlook "Sent Items".

I'm about halfway through an "article" on the same thing for our hosted clients, one of them asked for it, ... So they are all going to get it (whether they care or not) :)

What I really need to do is pull the INBOX items out of AOL via POP to clean it up because it is so jacked up. I was going to put the AOL mailbox into "unified folder view" and then POP it down to Outlook, removing messages from server. So, I could do that FIRST and then sort mail into folders to organize them in Outlook. Then I could do the SENT items as you said. But then how could I get the SENT folder changed into a more traditional POP sent folder after that with messages removed from AOL?

Can you post a link when you are done? I hate to say IMAP is like a mystery to me as I don't like to use it for personal reasons and it has always bled over to how I configure customers.

I know, people want a consistent mailbox across all devices, but I've always found IMAP to be fiddly especially in Outlook.

There is no 'traditional' SENT folder for POP3, 'sent items' storage is handled totally by the email client so in many clients can be configured independently and the server 'sent' folder is completely divorced from the client 'sent' folder.

Outlook's proprietary PST format makes it a real pain to work with because you really only have Outlook that can write PST files, without spending a not inconsiderable sum on "tools".

So, I can't really download (pull off the server) the AOL sent folder into Outlook in any way. It would be an IMAP subscribed folder permanently?

Not 'permanently' You simply connect to it once, then move the "sent messages" to the sent items for the new mailbox or the Outlook PST.

The AOL mailbox folders should then be empty and the only thing left behind would be IMAP logs. and you can drop the IMAP account.

Ok, so I'm missing something in what you're describing. Subscribe to the AOL SENT folder and map it to an Outlook folder other than SENT. Let it download and then move the items to the SENT folder in Outlook?

Then delete the IMAP account.

You just move them to where ever the "sent items" are going to be in the new account. That way the continuity that the user is accustomed to is not broken.

As long as they're not just "subscribed" any more and are permanently there even after I remove the account.

If you delete the IMAP account, it's gone from the client and the logs on the server will be wiped over time and all that will be left behind is the spam and emails from sources that have not been updated.

Ok. Thanks for all the help with this. I guess I need to get more comfortable with using IMAP.
