From time to time, several tips is suggesting using a PCL5 driver instead of PCL6 when having problems with newer HP printers with older OS(NT4.0). But when I try to "downgrade" the printer driver to an older one, all the clients does not recognize the new settings on the printer. The clients is strongly trying to withhold the newer driver, even after a reboot of the PCs. The print server is saying something else than the clients...

Any ideas how to get the clients to recognize changes on the print server when downgrading a printer driver?

Is there an uninstall and reinstall process that has to be done on the client in addition to the change on the server and a reboot of the client?

No - on the clients - all we have to do is "add new printer", choose network printer an write \\servername\printername. I have also tried to delete the printer and add the printer again but the clients keep arguing about showing the "old" info about the printer and is not viewing any changes on the printer from the printer server.

I use PCL 5e, better than 5 and more solid than 6.

5 or 5e the basic problem still remains, how do you get the clients to recognize the changed driver? My printers are all hooked directly to the clients so I dont know the answer to ocb's question.

ocb There is also an NT server forum. If your post in general printers doesnt get you any help, you could try that forum.

If you are using a NT Server and installing printer drivers on the server, then read this thread describing the differences between NT4's handling of printer drivers versus later versions... thread697-656324
