Hi

I have a Aironet 1242 lightweight ap.I want to convert it to an autonomous ap.I tried using the firmware c1240-k9w7-tar.default but the ap gives me an error "socket error".I can ping the ap from my laptop during the upgrade. The firmware is on my desktop in zip format.Should i extract the file and then try or should i be using a different firmware. Can somebody help me with this downgrade.

The file you downloaded from Cisco should have a name like "c1240-k9w7-tar.124-21a.JY.tar". This is a tarball containing the IOS and web console. All you need to do is remove the suffix "124-21a.JY.tar" and replace it with "default". I'm not sure where you got the zip file from... maybe look inside it for the tarball. If you can't find it, download a fresh copy from Cisco.

A couple other things...

Make sure that the file is at the tftp root. The AP is going to request the file from [ignore]"tftp://10.0.0.1/c1240-k9w7-tar.default"[/ignore]. See my comments from this thread730-1628335.

Ensure Windows firewall is allowing inbound TFTP traffic.

Make sure windows hasn't hidden an additional extension on the file name, making it "c1240-k9w7-tar.default.tar"
