I need to work on some reports that come from an instance of Reporting Services still running on SQL Server 2000. I uninstalled VS 2005 and reinstalled VS 2003 .NET, but I can't seem to find a way to get the project files for Reporting Services reinstalled. I've got the original SQL Server 2000 installer, but just doing the client install from that doens't get it for me.

What do I need to work on those reports, build and deploy them back to the SQL Server 2000 platform? And, where can I get it?

First, you don't need to uninstall VS 2005. VS 6.0, 2003, 2005, and 2008 can all reside together on the same machine. As for the "special" version of VS you need for SQL 2000 (RS), I'm pretty sure it is in the Reporting Services installation area. When you install RS, it should install it for you. So start by doing a full install of RS 2000 and see where that gets you. Don't quote me, but I'd start there.

Hope that helps!

Odd. I got information from MSDN that said the Reporting Services stuff (Business Intelligence) has some registry clashes between VS 2003 and VS 2005 and that VS 2005 must be removed in order to make this work.

When you say 'Do a full install of RS 2000...' are you suggesting a full install of SQL Server 2000 with a Reporting Services DB, etc.? If so, it makes it a bit tough since my development workstation is an XP machine from which I work on the reports resident on several SQL Servers. Since SQL Server won't install on XP (at least it refuses to any time I try), I don't see how I'd be able to do that.

I'm not that great with SQL 2000, I'm just aware how SQL 2005 works. I find it odd MS would say that. I know they work side by side because I do it now.

If I understand what you are saying above, it seems like your only problem is you can't open the solutions for the reports written in RS 2000? Where are they? You should be able to do an "Open Solution" and navigate to the .sln file and open it. Do your work, compile it, and voila. The other way you can do it is open each .rdl file in VS and upload them through the enterprise interface.

Maybe I misunderstood your question?

Don't forget that in SQL Server 2000 SSRS wasn't included on the CD. It came out years later. It's a seperate download from the Microsoft web site.

I thought that was so (download someplace) but I can't find it on the web site anymore - it's all 2005 and now 2008 stuff. I found an old eval version that seems to do the job and will probably get me through this need, but if you know where the 'real' version might be that would be better.

Really? I could swear it's on my SQL 2000 CD. I've been a 2005 person myself since it came out. Since this is not free software, I can't see MS just letting anyone download it for free. I found a link to the evaluation version if nothing else.

Unless they repressed the CD, it's not on there. Reporting services didn't come out until like 2003 or so (the eval is dated 2004).

(Here is a press release about SSRS 2000 SP1 which says that it's a download for the RTM version, but doesn't provide the download link
According to this MS site you have to order a CD (it's not a US Microsoft.com site), but the CD order is free.
I'd give Microsoft a call and see if you can still have them send you the disk. You'll also notice the release date of SSRS 1/27/04.

Interesting. Is it possible they put them on the same disc after the fact? I got my disc off MSDN a long time back and I no longer have MSDN to check. Now that I think of it, I think SSRS was on a second disc. I'm definitely getting 2000 confused with 2005. You're right, the best bet is to call or email MS directly and ask them. At least you can use the demo for 6 months if you have to. Hope that helps!
