Hello,
I would like to know the difference between Cisco IOS and Supervisor engine.

also, Some catalyst switches operate in "set" command mode. Does that mean they dont run IOS ? what operating system do those switches operate ?

Yadu.

One is CATOS the other is IOS CATOS tends to lend itself to the higher end switches whereas IOS to the routers although the 29xx and the 35xx 19xx etc run IOS they are both easy enough to get on with.

In order to understand this, you need to know the history of Cisco.

Many times to get a new technology, Cisco has purchased another company. A classic example is Cresendo which Cisco purchased and glued their name onto the chassis.

You do this a few times and you end up with a few different interfaces.. ie.. IOS based interface and SET based interface. To Cisco's credit, they do try to normalize the interfaces as much as they can within reason.

Any Cisco device runs a *IOS* of some type. The SET type refers to that the commands are issued at the command line by using SET xxxxx or CLEAR XXXX. A equilvent command in the normal IOS may use ENABLE or DISABLE. Same thing, just a different way of keying it in. The classic examples of this are the 2900 series IOS based switch and the SET based CAT5000 series switch.

On a platform like the 6500 you can use either IOS or CATOS. Cisco are slowly moving towards IOS although it still lacks some of the features of CATOS. I'm recommending that customers stick to CATOS unless they have a good reason for wanting IOS.

Anymore there isn't much more than CatOS can do over IOS.. I've done recent implementations of 6500's.. One of the biggest downfalls of the IOS was that you couldn't do ranges of ports, which is now possible in IOS. So there is really no reason to do CatOS anymore. 8500 series run IOS, 4000 series can run IOS too...

Especially when a MSFC is involved, run IOS, it'll save you the hastle of having to switch from the switching module to the MSFC..

Really? How do you do that? Man, now I wish we had the money to buy a second 6509 for me to play with... I only have a spare 4006... darn...

Anyway, still like to know how to do that part :)
