Hi guys,

I hope you don't mind but I have to post a double site critique!
I may not be able to do much web design for a few months (don't ask!!) so I am in a rush to get a few things done.
I just put the front page of each site online but the other pages will pretty much follow the same template.

This is the first site, I am fairly happy with this, and want to keep it simple, and it's for a limited audience, but i'd appreciate your feedback on use of colours, graphics, layout etc etc

link::
I'm not at all happy with this, i just did it over the last 2 nights.
In particular I'm not crazy about the left menu, I was trying to put a simple border on it but Netscape caused me problems so i settled for this instead. The categories section looks cramped and there's lots of blank space at the bottom, i'd prefer to stay with a white background if possible. Any suggestions?
Also I found this slow to load, what do you think?

I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions you may have. Be tough!! :)

Thanks

Hi Cian,

downloads
1)Make the 6 topics in the upper navigation bar also images.

2) I should put the javascript (functions) in the <head> as much as possible in a js-file and make just one link to it.
I saw you have one allready: <script language=&quot;javascript&quot; src=&quot;imgrotator.js&quot;></script> I think you would need those functions also later on the other pages. It saves code!

3) I should put the <style> in the <head> as much as possible in the a style-sheet. <LINK REL=&quot;STYLESHEET&quot; TYPE=&quot;text/css&quot; HREF=&quot;YourCSSFile.css&quot;> I think you would need this also on the other pages.

macaonghusa
1) make the reference to your site at the bottom a link! (
2)if you think the site will grow in the future: see also downloads (2)+(3)

general
About the white space: For 800*600 screens it's OK !! users whit bigger screens know they can arrive at such sites.

Hope this helps Cian,

Erik

Hi Boomerang,
thank's very much!

Downloads:
1.I'll try the 6 images over the weekend and see what they look like!
2. Very good suggestion and it make a LOT of sense. The image rotator links are likely to change a lot so uts not practical unless I have thise functions in the external js file. Whats the easiest way (remember I have no idea of java) just add the functions to the js file and reference then to a div of some sort??

3. Yeah the styles will be in an external CCS, when i'm starting a new template I always put the styles in the head sction until I have the style fixed, then I transfer them to the ext CSS file before creating the second pages. Good suggestion though.

macaonghusa, it will grow to about 10-12 pages, half are done now.
The link, i'll take care of that.

The Java, I tried tp put as much as possible in the head or an external js file.
Apart from the date script, which is short anyway, the others are &quot;templates&quot; which I just have to pop into my pages. The login script, I dont think I can do any more with this anyway.
Do you think I need to clean up these scripts?? Am i creating extra work for myself leaving the scripts the way they are?

Thanks for the suggestions, great help!!

It's Javascript !!! NOT Java. Java is complete different!

Dowloads (2): Just add the functions to your js-file and call the function in your html-page. The link in the <head> will do the rest.

Macaonghusa: I don't have time to analyse the login script, so I can't give an opinion, sorry.

Glad I could help,

Hi Erik,

Sorry, I often use java instead of javascript because its quicker to type! I know they are different but i'm just lazy! LOL

Ok, i'll try that with the script! Thanks again.

Hi Cian,

The sites look good..

BTW.. Nice comments in the login script!! LOL

Can you use perl at all? If so then use that instead, I know that you say there is nothing in the restricted area but it is still better to secure it from prying eyes.

The other thing is the download section headings might look better as bold text. (CGI/Perl , Tools etc)

Hope this helps Wullie

hey Wullie,

thanks for the feedback mate.

Comments: you liked them? it has been revised since! :)

Perl: yeah, I have a great script called Locked Area, but it's proving bit of a dog to install so I went with the easier option! :) I'll have another think about it.

Thanks again guys!!
