Hi guys,
I recently download MSN messenger 5 from Microsoft website. I thought it will update my windows messenger 4.7, but actually it didn't. Now, every time I open MS Outlook, windows messenger automatically pops out in the system tray, and if I click the MSN messenger shortcut, it will also appear in tray. I don't want this to happen. I just want MSN messenger 5, but I don't know how to uninstall windows messenger 4.7 since it doesn't exist in Control Panel->Add/Remove Hardware. Can someone please help me? Thanks.

They are different programs as you have discovered.

First, rename the file msmsgs.exe to something else. It is found under your Program Files, Windows Messenger group.

Second, use MSCONFIG to remove any startup entry for Windows Messenger.

Third, configure Outlook or Outlook Express not to run Messenger under Options.

Fourth, configure your Anti-Virus Software not to check Messenger activity.

Fifth, configure your Hotmail account not to run Messenger.

As long as the file msmsgs.exe is renamed, it will not run.

Finally, use gpedit.msc and as a local policy disable Messenger from starting.
