I am doing some research for a client that is interested in the Double Drive thru configuration that several QSRs are installing in the area...2 menu boards filter to 1 paypoint and 1 serve point.
Basically, they would like to know how the software identifies the correct customer as they enter the single line to pay and receive the correct food?

Depending on the POS-software you are using, there are several ways of configuration how to handle that.

Kind regards
Mirko

Thanks for your update.
Currently my POS software doesn't really support that option very well. They (the software company) are willing to to make changes but want us to create the specifications. Basically, tell them how we want it to work. On the surface that sounds great but we would like to know how other systems approach this problem and what pitfalls we should try to avoid

So I suggest using a "POS-Group" for the terminals in the drive through. In the case only one window is open (eg. in slow times the receiving window also handles payment) there should be two fully functional terminals. In this case any POS software should handle everything correctly.

Scenario:
Ordertaking - payment window - payment - receiving window - receive - finalize order

In the payment window there should be two terminals. One is for ordertaking, while the other one is handling the payment (one employee for both functions) - and vice versa.

Step 1: Taking the order, ringing up items, payment
Step 2: Terminal sends the closed bill to the receiving terminal to be displayed there.
Step 2a: eventually use an additional kitchen display to display the order(s)
Step 3: Pack the ordered items
Step 4: Hand over to customer
Step 5: employee uses a "Finish" button, displayed on every order to clear the finalized orders display.
Step 6: Finalized order disappears, next order jumps to the left, more orders appear next to the "actual" one.

Of course not to forget functions to recall a finalized order in case employee finished the wrong one. Usually it should work from left to right, but in case food has to be prepared and customer is sent to "park", the other orders are processed first.

Hopefully you may understand, how I described it - don´t hesitate to ask if you have got any further questions.

Kind regards
Mirko
