Double clicking in Outlook 2000

I tend to open mail messages in Outlook 2000 by double clicking on the message with the mouse. However I have noticed recently that after Outlook has been running a certain period of time, this stops working, and the only way to open messages is either to right click and select Open from the popup menu, or else to hit Enter on the keyboard.

Restarting Outlook does not solve the problem, and the Microsoft knowledge base knows nothing about it. The only way to restore the double click functionality is to restart the computer.

Is anyone else aware of this problem and if anything can be done about it?
