My company is using Crystal Reports Pro version 7.0.1.100. We have an installation where 4 users share a PC running Windows XP Pro SP2. Each user has their own account.

I'm having trouble opening a .rpt file in three of the accounts. In one of the user accounts the file opens as it should when you double click on the file. In the other three accounts Crystal Reports opens, but the data file doens't open. Once Crystal Reports is running I can use the Open command to open the file and it works fine.

It's not a serious problem, but it definately shows that something odd is going on. I always thought that double clicking a file was the same as opening a file from within a program. Obviously it's not.

Has anybody ran into this before?

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for your comments.

Hi,
When one of the accounts that this happens to is logged in, look at the file associations that are in effect..
Explore..Tools..Folder Options..Program Types

I suspect that those users do not have the correct associations - If No program is associated with .rpt files, have the user shift-right-click on a .rpt files and select Open with..Browse to crw32.exe and also check the 'always use this program..' box..This sometimes works, but I have had it fail and needed to rerun the install to get the associations correct.

I'd also be concerned in general about running CR 7 (PRO) on XP-PRO SP2...support for CR-7 ended on October 31, 2003.

You should really try to talk your client into an upgrade to a supported version of the product (10 or XI).

Thanks for the help. I had known that our version was old, but it hadn't came to mind concerning this problem. It might be that there isn't support for multiple users under XP in this version.

I'll also look into the association idea. I'm getting SOME association, but maybe it's not with the right .exe

Thanks
