dots effect

hello all, im trying desperately to make a "dot effect" fill.
im not very good at explaining this i know, but what i mean is the type of rastered fill you would see if you zoomed into an area of color in a comic.

i guess its kind of like this:

exept 1 block of colour.

can anyone help?

Not sure exactly what you mean, but if you literally just want lots of small dots I'd do it manually:

Make a circle and copy and paste a few times. Use the Align palette to arrange them neatly and distribute them evenly (make sure all options are showing on the palette). Continue until you have the desired amount. Use a clipping path to get a particular shape.

I'm sure someone will have a much better way of doing it but in the meantime...
