hey all,

i'm looking for a good, fast dot matrix printer that can handle forms. i've been looking at the Lexmark Forms Printer 2481, but cannot find any more that match the spec of the Lexmark.

Its for printing payslips from a W2k server/98 workstations.

I've already tried all the printers in the office, [Epson FX1170, Epson LQ300, OKI4410, Lexmark4226] and none of them worked properly, they either wouldn't accept the form design specified or wouldn't print at all.

thanks in advacne.

What size is the form, and how many parts?

As for the printer, see if you can get a hold of a used Genicom 38xx series. Fast, durable, and easy to maintain

I use an Okidata 590 for my dot matrix printing.
I just use 8 1/2 x 11 paper so it don't know if it would do forms
There's a service manual you can look at here:

It goes along at a pretty good clip in the dos/draft utility mode. It has an internal rear feed but you can get optional bottom push and top pull tractors. (I wasnt in a hurry so I got mine over a period of time on eBay.) There's a lever that switches the active tractor-so before I switched to laser checks, I could keep pin feed checks on the bottom tractor and regular paper on the rear tractor and use the park button and tractor lever to switch back and forth. The top to bottom path is short and straight and looks like it would be good for labels too although I've not tried to print any.

I'd think it would do forms, but given the experience you've cited above i'd hesitate to say for sure. We've used a Panasonic 1150 and an Oki 380 for paychecks here, but those are older, and I expect slower, than what you need.

hey,

the forms are sized '9in x 8.5in' and are three part paper. running from unix onto the epson fx1170 the payslips printed beautifully, but i just couldn't get the epson talking with W2000. using the OKI4410 on W2000 the payslips printed, but jammed every second/third form & messed up the prints, & nudged everything out of alignment.

the boss decided to buy a new printer because we need this like yesterday; he bought a tally 2240 24pin dot matrix.

any thoughts on how good/bad his choice of printer is?

thanx

just a wee update, the tally was delivered yesterday & tested, and it works well, the real test is tonight [payslips night] so fingers crossed it does its job.

thanx all
