fizzak, no real distinction b/w .com or .net except that one is more widely used (and therefore the hardest to create domain names for), and the other is on its way up the ladder.
If you're looking for which is more beneficial then the answer is: makes no difference, excpet that most web hosting companies charge a little less for .net domain names because they want to advertise that more. But other then that, either one will work...

Just Imagine.
Sbrowsers magically place .com at the end of a URL if they are unable to find the domain you initially typed. This is great if you have a .com address of course.
Personally I would suggest you buy both the .com and the .net for your domain... and I'd suggest picking up the local domain for companies in any country you want to do (serious) business. ie: .co.uk (UK), .com.au (AUS)
Generally most people when typing a URL will start off by adding the .com suffix to the end, then depending upon the site they are interested in, they may also try .org and .net, after that they will usually enter their countries most common TLD instead (in the UK, this is generally .co.uk).
But as Jeff stated, buy them both and any others you can get your hands that you think people may use to try to get to your site. It's beneficial to site hits so it's worth it.
