I posted this comment in Hardware, as I was looking for a cord for this old computer. It's an AMSTRAD PPC640D portable Dos based computer. I need any software that will run on it, Any hints about where I can find some?

"thanks for the info. Yes it is pretty funny about the museum being the first hit...[the obsolete computers museum]
Kind of like looking for a friend you ain't seen in years and someone takes you to the graveyard!!
I'll keep trying. I have another question about software for it...to start, I need a 3 1/2 inch disk (DD) with Dos on it. Theres' no hard drive, just 2 disk drives which use 720k disks. I know this is ancient stuff; but it's why I'm so interested in getting it back in operation again. I used it years ago for a short time.Yea, before Windows came out. Thanks...I'll probably post this in software forum too.

What kind of software do you want or need?

I think MSDOS 4.01 would have been the last supplied on DD720s but it has been a while since I've opened that drawer to check.

Your computer is probably a good candidate for one of the museums.

Thanks Ed. I've thought about the museum thing; I wondered if this thing could be worth money somewhere, being such a rare item. Just wondering. But I wanted to have software for it again, so I could give some demonstrations to kids to show them what we had back then.I don't even know if the disks I have for it will still work. The first thing i need is a Dos disk to get things moving. I used to use LotusWorks on it all the time, but I'd love to have any others you'd be willing to share copies of? I have some old CD's that won't run on Vista anymore that I could trade. One is Kurzweil's VoicePad, voice activation software for Win 95 and others. Just let me know how to go about getting my hands on the Dos disks? Thank you. Thom

I was/am into SWTP 6800/6809 stuff, in that I have not yet given it all away. Fairly recently somebody unloaded a 6800 on ebay, reportedly at $2000. So there is some market for some of it.

I think I have succeeded in getting 6 into the hands of collectors, not for money, but to make sure that people know about them.
One is at Vintage-Computer, try a google search "ed fair" SWTP 6800 and you'll hit the pictures. The one with the front panel switches isn't mine but the rest, including the board hacks, are.

All my 8080, 8086, 80286, & 80386 has gone, mostly to recycling, but some ended up in a children's museum. But I do still have some of the boards for 386 & later.

Try an email to unixstuff at the throwaway address company juno and we'll see what I can find for the early clones.

Wow...a treasure trove of information. Thanks Ed. I'll check into that stuff and will be in touch with you periodically about this/other items, if ya don't mind? I'm just learning computers (I've been using them since 1989) and have alot of questions. Where is the place to go for Vista questions? Thanks again. Thom

There is a Vista forum here if you really want to do that. I've successfully avoided it so far.

I've been hearing that about Vista from others, unfortunately it came with the comp I bought recently. But Windows 7 is on its way, maybe that'll be an improvement. (fat chance, thanks microsoft) Thom

If you get some diskettes and peruse the threads at vintage computer, I think you can find some ideas on where to get dos.

You need to be careful with download sites, but there are sites that offer downloads of old dos programs too.
