Iam trying to get a dos program to run on a XP machine (Dell). but when I attempt to activate via a Pif it provides the error message "unable to access address"

So, I thought it woul be a config.nt error, so I attempeted to edit the file using the supplied DOS edit program in, and this program will not load, so I know assume it is a problem with dos and not the dos App I was trying to load.

Does anyone have any practical ideas, or comments to point me in the right direction?

Regards
Dave

Xp does not have DOS. It has it's own "command" system. Any pure DOS programs, or utilities will be ignored.

Maybe your program will run, maybe not. It certainly won't need the PIF.

Open windows explorer and navigate to the folder that contains the .exe file you want to run. Double click on it. If you are lucky, it will startup the DOS program in a command window.

Thank you for your help. I have the Dos program running on a number of machines running XP, Howeverm=, we have just started to experience problems getting it to run at all. The error message we are getting is "unable to access address" when attempting to run it from the PIF. I have tried to run it from the command prompt and this fails as well

If you right click on the exe and go to properties of the exe and then choose compatibility and say "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 95" what happens?

As for editing PIF's and text files try using notepad instead.

I have tried using the Compatabilty wizard and changing the compatability in the pif to 98 & 95 but no change.

I have also changed the files from to 300 but still same ole same ole.

This is a really strange one, it looks like there a problem in Dos being recognised

Hi Simon
I have tried setting the buffers to 300 with no effect. (properties of cmd prompt. When you say buffers = comment is this literal? eg config.nt buffers= comment?

Cheers
Dave

Yes, the buffers= comment should be in the config.nt.

Try something like buffers=60 (it varies from 20-80)

Can you run the program in a seperate memory space? I've had some success with that.

can you do the following,, open a command window,, ie do the run command then cmd,, which opens a dos window then change directories to where you want to be, and type edit ????. This should get you the old fashion dos editor.

I notice that some of my old DOS games quit working properly after last months (July) MS updates.
