Dont want to install a network if possible

I have two computers, one with W98 and one with XPP.
Instead of networking the computers and the printer is it possible to connect one computer to the printer via the parallel connection and the other computer via the USB connection?

I've done this many times, but I was using the parallel port and the network port. Should be fine with USB too.
