don't know former programmers password to change the database!!!!!???

I was contracted to update and modify an existing database. The database is split, and the front end turned into a .mde, so i can't change the code. I found the .mdb front end to edit, but no one knows the password the old programmer set, and it's been over a year since it has been changed. I've never run into anything like this, is there a way around this? thanks in advance
