I am a person with developmental disabilities who has used home automation devices and controlled them using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. These devices would receive commands using (the now obsolete) X10 protocol. There was no fear of cyber attacks because these devices would only receive instructions via electrical wiring and never send information back to the transmitter. Today's protocols allow the control of domotics to occur both within the home or anywhere within the world. End-users have sacrificed security for availability. In 2017, there were 8.4 billion things connected to the Internet. Granted, not all of these were domotics; however, they were all created using proprietary hardware and operating systems. What does the IOT industry need to do to make our homes a sanctuary once again? This article provides some ideas on how to improve IOT security.
