I have always suspected this but have now seen it with my own eyes... My server logs seem to incomplete after a server hang/crash and don't include the final few lines of messages. This makes it impossible to troubleshoot these hangs/crashes as any errors etc. are not recorded in the log.

I had this problem today when a server hung, I displayed the console on our iSeries, saw a couple of error messages regarding HTTP and thought I would do a search on them once I had restared the server. So I restart the server, look at the log only to find that messages stopped being written to the log about 1 minute earlier and I now have no record of the error messages.

This can't be right, can anyone offer an explanation?

Running Domino 7.0.1 FP1 on an IBM iSeries (i5/OS 5.4)

Regards,
Tony.

Hi Tonty,

the missing log information is normally included in the corresponding nsd file that is produced during a crash. You can find it in the directory IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT which is under the server directory. That's how it is on our iSeries which is the same version as your ´machine.

Bye, Gaby

Thanks for the reply.
Next question:- How do I view this file? The folder IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT does not show in my domino admin client, if I navigate to it using a mapped drive in windows none of the programs that are listed open the file (Lotus Notes is NOT one of them), Edit is geyed out if I look at the IFS via ops navigator??

Regards,
Tony.

Hi Tonty,

you cannot view this file in the Windows explorer. You must get it via FTP from the corresponding directory on your iSeries to your local hard drive on the PC. Then you can open it with Notepad.
The other thing you can do is view the file directly on the iSeries. On the command prompt enter
wrklnk YOURSERVERDIRECTORYNAME
after that option 5 to look at the complete directory. Then go to the IBM_Technical_support directory and again use option 5 to Display. There you will find the nsd-files which you can view with option 5 again. You will find the last log entries at the bottom of the file.

Hi Geier,
Thanks alot, can read it fine using WRKLNK. The NSD file didn't tell me a gret deal to be honest but I found the missing entries from the log file in the cosole log.

You deserve a star :0)

Tony.
