Hello,

I reloaded my server yesterday after major hardware upgrade. The server was down for about 2-3 hrs. I have 4 domains that have been working fine both dns and web for months. After restoring httpd and dns files only two domains resolved. Now today none resolve. I can get to my default domain main page through browser using server ip.
Why would domains that were working last night not resolve today I didn't change anything. Can't ping any of the four either. Here is one that will not resolve
Any clues???

If I try to dig that domain @ns1.myhostman.com (listed as primary nameserver @ InterNIC) I get a 'connection timed out' message. Is that the DNS you're running on that server?

Hi coper,
I ran "dig and didn't see a dns "A" record for it. There should be an "ANSWER SECTION" but I didn't see one. Run "dig" on a working url and you will see what the report should look like. This has nothing to do with your install unless you were using your own dns servers. I would check the dns records of the domains that aren't working and see if that takes care of the problem.

hi,

Yes it is. The strange thing is that a friend of mine at another location can pull up the domain above and 2 of my other domains. I can't get to any of them from any other pc's on my lan either.

I can only think that there is some type of propagation going on. I see know errors in my log files and I do see my friends ip in my http access logs with no errors in error log.

Thanks for help

Hi RhythmAce,

>you were using your own dns servers.

Yes, the server that I upgraded was the dns server for these domains.

Do you think cause of the down time I'm looking at a propagation period again?

Seems odd that a friend in another state can pull up two of the four domains including the one mentioned above. Thanks

If he is the only one that can reach them from the outside world, your friend may be seing cached data. I get server can't be found error in my browser. Can he ping the sites?

The friend might just be getting a cached address lurking in some other DNS.

Seems to me something might be up with your DNS though, seeing as how I can't get a response from 'dig @ns1.myhostman.com

Hi folks,

Unfortunatley he's at work behind a firewall so he can't ping out. But he can get to site mentioned above, use the feedback form and send it and I receive the message via email in a few seconds. So this tells me he's not pulling from cache, right?. I can see his http request in my access logs to.

Thanks for helping

Not necessarily. If the address has not changed and he had it cached on his end, your DNS doesn't even have to be in the loop.

His requests showing up in your logs doesn't indicate where he's getting your IP from (ie whether it's cached or using your DNS to resolve), only that he does indeed have it. If you post the IP for that site here and I visit, you'll also see my hit, but it doesn't mean I resolved the address...

DumTech,

Your right. After you had mentioned the dns files I thought I'd better take another look. Ooops when I restored backup files I missed restoring the current named.conf file.
I restored backup named.conf file from this time last year.

Thanks for your help - Things are finally back to normal.

Sure enough, it resolves lickety-split now... :)

Glad to help!
