I would like to begin studying up on a couple of areas: domains and AD (active directory to be certain). What would be some suggestions to start swimming in these waters? Open to various media: online, books, just about anything goes here.

If you have the time to read buy one of the core study kits for 2k3 or 2k8. Get some memory on your pc and virtualise a playground to try stuff out.

These days most of the books are pretty similar i personally prefer syngress ones thou.

If you want to AD I suggest the O'Reilly Active Directory book;

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

If you are looking for study materials then the 70-294, 70-297, and 70-640 are the relevant exams. The 200-series exams are for 2003, the 600-series exam is for 2008. Any study guides targeted at those exams should be helpful.

Install a domain on a test lab (doesn't need to be much horsepower). It'll give you a crash course.

If you want to know and prepare yourself for AD exams, it is always best to have a domain at your disposal to play with. Also, as stated above, the o'reilly books and some practice exam software are the way to go. Although you may know AD already, it is more important to now Microsofts "Best Practices" which may be completely different from the way that you normally work with AD and windows server. Do a quick google on microsofts bests practices as related to the exam you will be taking and you'll see for yourself. Best of luck!
