Hi,

I'm trying to promote a W2K server to a DC in a mixed-mode domain. When
users log on, the domain is called 'ABC', but on the current DC when viewing
Active Directory, the domain is called 'ABC.local'. Because of this (I
think), I'm getting an error when trying to do the upgrade of the new DC.

Will chnaging the domain to native mode have any effect of this? How do I
change the domain to 'ABC' in the active directory (any why does it have
'.local' after it)?

Thanks,

You will have to run DCPROMO from the Run command. This will remove active directory services. CAUTION - you will lose all user accounts and group security!! You can then change computer and domain names. You should plan a logical namespace for the DNS and directory services such as "computername"."domainname"."server level" or server.abc.local Only use .local if your server will not ever run applications requiring replication of Internet DNS servers such as IIS or Exchange Server. Run DCPROMO again and setup active directory and DNS again, you should be okay. More info here:

Thanks for the reply.

So there's no way to get around this without blowing the active directory services off the current domain controller (and thus loding all of the users/groups)?

I do have a script sent to me by Microsoft which will fix disjointed namespace issues without DCPROMO. Has worked for me every time. send an email to: admin@pronet-solutions.com and I'll send it to you
