Greetings

Im installing a new SBS 2003 server for the first time and going through it step by step. I have a little trouble with the domain name, I can log in via the IP address but not with the server name.

Also I am having trouble with the DHCP scope. I add a scope with the IP ranges for the two routers that we have (10.0.0.2 which is connected to the BB connection and 192.168.1.1 which is a wireless router). When I disable DHCP on these two routers and add the scope to DHCP in SBS I can not connect with any client computers to the DHCP server. when I reenable DHCP on these routers I can connect automatically to web etc as before. Coupled with this I can not connect to the server via the server name i.e. but only through its IP address.

Im guessing I have some configuration incorrectly set and any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

James Gates

This would lead me to believe it is a DNS Issue. I am not too sure how you have things set up the way you do but i think you need to do some reading up on SBS before you start the install.

Check this and then get back us on the results.

1) Make your Scope 192.168.2.10 - 192.168.2.254
2) Configure the BB Router to have a LAN address of 192.168.2.1
3) Configure your Server to have the following IP Info
- IP - 192.168.2.2
- Subnet - 255.255.255.0
- Gateway - 192.168.2.1
- DNS Server - 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.2.2
4) Make sure your DHCP server is giving out 192.168.2.2 as a DNS server to all its clients.

Once all that is done then you should be able to connect using

You should not have a router on your LAN side... just a switch. That is your problem. With SBS you do not define DHCP Scopes manually. This is done automatically when you run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW -- which is linked as Connect to the Internet in the Server Management Console > To-Do List)

A visual how-to is here: and a full networking overview for SBS is at
DHCP should be disabled on your router, and if it was enabled the first time you connected the SBS, then you need to re-establish the DHCP service on the SBS per the instructions at the bottom of this page:
