I have various Win XP laptops that send and receive email via my own in house email server. The PC's that stay within the building have the local IP address (192.168 range) of the server in the clients config so all is ok. I have had to put the full domain path in for the remote users as the IP wil obviously not work when they are connected via there own dsl connections or hotel broadband etc. Although this seems to work ok, while they are in the building, it doesn't seem to be smart enough to know they are there as it still tries to make a connection out and then back in to get the mail. It works but just slower than the local clients. Is there a way to let WIn XP know that when in the building, translate the domain to the local IP to save any excess traffic?

Using Eudora 7 as client and have an SMC 7804WBRA router for connection to Internet via ADSL

Are you running an internal DNS server? Add a host record pointing the FQDN to the internal IP of your mail server and you should be all set.
