Domain Slowness ?

Hi,
I'm not sure where to start. I have three 2003 domain controllers with AD. Two are located at my site the other is at another location. I also still have an NT domain running with around 10 users. The NT is located at the same location as the two 2003 DC's. Everyone's DNS points to the 2003 DC.

Lately, there have been some users telling me there logons and overall computer response has been very slow. This is only happening at my location which is where the two 2003 DC's are. I'm not sure where to start looking.

Thanks,
Tony

Usually slow logons can be due to DNS issues. If it's only some clients, check to ensure that there DNS settings are truly correct
You may want to try running dcdiag and netdiag to ensure proper AD comms
Also although these users are local to you, are there differences in the way they are networked (ie diff VLANs, switches, etc?)

Curretnly there are 4 users complaining of slowness. Two are connected to the NT domain and two are connected to the 2003 domain. Both use different switches. I check the switches and I don't see any errors. And their nic's are set to 100 Full Duplex.

So NT users pointing to a 2003 DNS should be ok?

Users connecting to the NT domain rely on NetBIOS and not DNS for name resolution. Do you have a WINS server in place? If not check to see if these users have LMHOSTS files that have incorrect info. Also check NBTSTAT to see how they are communicating on the network
Your Win2003 domain users on the other hand are reliant on DNS working. Do you have a DC that's configured as a GC?
If there are no physical network issues, have you checked the event logs on the user's machines to see if there are any issues

I have had problems with setting NICs to full duplex (yeah, and the switch ports are set to full duplex too). Are the NICs in the other machines set to full duplex? If you set the switch to auto and the NICs to auto (my preferred way of doing things) do they stay at full duplex (my experience) or fall back to half duplex? Do they run faster at half?

Just a couple of thoughts from 15* weather,

Joe B

Hi itsp1965,
Yes we do have a WINS server. And all clients don't use LMHOSTS. Now when you say run NBTSTAT, are you saying run that on a problem client? Not sure what you mean by a domain controller as a GC? Still haven't checked the event log yet...
