domain resolve issue ping hostname

I am pretty sure i know whats wrong i just dont know how to correct it!

I have a linux live cd that i have added the cisco vpn client to which connects fine , thing is i cant resolve addresses

i would like to be able to ping web1 or web2 etc

but i have to enter the full domain name web1.mydomain.uk
i have checked /etc/resolv.conf and it contains both the remote locations dns servers which are reachable.

i have edited the /etc/hosts file to contain the following

127.0.0.1 localhost vpn-cd vpn-cd.mydomain.uk

but still if i ping web1 it doesn't resolve.

i was expecting it to see what its own domain was an append it to the end of web1

any ideas ?

You might try explicitly configuring resolv.conf to search your domain. Add a line to resolv.conf which reads:

search mydomain.uk

It sounds to me like the default domain name is not defined, but I don't know how to fix that.

i have created a bit of a bodge script , i tail the resolv.conf and echo the domain i want and save it back to resolv.conf

this way the dynamic dns addresses are obtained at boot time its only when i attempt to connect to my vpn that the domain name is entered into the file so upon susscessful connection i can ping web1 etc.
