I wonder if anyone has experianced the following scenrio.

I have a client who network consists of 3 2003 servers (1 dc, 2 members) and the maintence of these servers is outsourced to a large company who control all aspects of the domain. The customer has decided that this an too expensive solution and has decided to have control over the network himself. The outsourcing company will not allow anyone access to the server because of security. So i will begin a scratch instsllation of a new server and migrate profiles etc etc.My question is, on 1 member server there is a sql server, if i demote this server to a workgroup and then join it to the new domain, csn i expect any problems with accessing sql afterwards and if so, how would i fix it? I hope i have explained myself well enough snd thank you for reading this.

Have your client inform there management company that they are required to hand over the password for the Administrator account. As it is their network they have every right to the passwords.

If you end up having to remove the machine from the domain and add it to a new domain you'll need to add all the domain groups and logons that need access to the database.

Hi Denny

Many thanks for your swift reply. The management company are being very awkward and have point blank refused to hand over the password, so i am going to have to remove the machine from the domain. Having just looked at sql manager, there are 4 databases for various accounting programmes. As you probably realise, i have near enough zero knowledge of sql!Under each database, there is a folder called users and below the databases is a folder named security with a subfolder named logins. I have checked each user account in the logins folder and sql authentication is used for these accounts except servername\administrator and builtin\administrator which use windows authentication. So since the users are authenticated by sql, am I correct in thinking there is no need to recreate the users when the server is moved to the new domain? should i do anything with the administrator accounts after the server is joined to the new domain? I hope i have explained this clear enough and thank you for taking the time to help me.

As the accounts are SQL accounts you do not need to do anything to them. Make sure that you know the SA account before you take the machine off the domain.

You'll also want to make sure that you change the account that is running the SQL Server if it is running under a Windows account.
