I recently set up Windows 2000 server and Active Directory using a document I found on the web (
This suggested using the following naming configuration for the network:

company.local

rather than using a registered domain name:

e.g. machine_name.company.domain_name

So my question is:

I have a domain name oracledatabaseconsulting.com registered with demon who supplied me with 16 static ip addresses.

Will each of these IP addresses automatically be associated with this doamin name.

i.e. machine_name.company.local.oracledatabaseconsulting.com

or do I need to enter such info in the hosts files.

I basically need to be able to access my machines over the web and I'm not sure how I can do this.

I hope this makes sense!!

Thank you in advance for any help

Cheers

Charlie

No - only with the .local domain.

>i.e. >machine_name.company.local.oracledatabaseconsulting.com

The internal & external domain are not linked, and don't know anything about each other. They are two COMPLETELY sepearate domains.

Some options

1 - Use the external domain name on your internal network and host oracetc.com domain yourself using w2k dns servers
2 - Use the external domain name on your internal network - give your ISP all the machines names & IPs to place in the zone file
3 - Use a .local domainname and use port mapping/NAT to translate addresses
4 - Forget about giving external access blanket wide and consider using VPNs etc.

Thanks for the help!

I have chosen to setup the network using internal following suggestions made in the paper found at the URL supplied previoulsy. Following a forum posting on that website a point was made that:

'You really do want to avoid using the registered DNS internally. You will be creating a "split-brain" DNS scenario and it requires more security tweaking.'

This may be wrong but I went with it and cannot reconfigure everything as I have installed Oracle products which rely on the exisiting doamin settings.

Anyway I think I will look into your 3rd point.

Do you have any further information on :

Use a .local domainname and use port mapping/NAT to translate addresses

Or can you suggest where I might find usefull papers on this.

I will be using VPN in the future but not yet.

Thanks

Best Regards

Charlie
