Hello-

We currently have an Exchange 2007 with a domain name of xxxxx.com (example) and we are changing that domain name to xyz123.com . What needs to happen to still accept mail from the old domain and make the new one the primary? What do I need todo for the users to be able to send and receive mail from the new domain name?

If someone can point me to the correct steps I would appreciate that very much.

Thank you!

Are you changing your internal domain name, or just receiving email for a new external domain?

If it's the latter, it's easy. In EMC, go to Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport and select the Accepted Domains tab. Hit "New Accepted Domain" and configure as appropriate. Then go to the Email Address Policies tab, and modify it to include your new domain (using whatever standard format you use for email addresses). Set the new email address as default in the policy, and apply it. Note, if you have any mailboxes that are not updated according to policy for whatever reason, you will need to fix these manually. That's pretty much it, you're done.

If it's the former, on the other hand (i.e. you're changing your active directory domain), I would call this a royal PITA. We did this about four years ago, and it was easier to just build out a new exchange organization in the new forest, set up a trust, and migrate all of the mailboxes.

Hi Thanks for the reply.

The domain name change is just for SMTP (inbound and outbound). Do I need to get a new domain certificate?

You shouldn't require new certificates unless you change machine host/domain names.

If you don't need to use a new name to connect to the server from the outside for OWA and Autodiscover/ActiveSync, then you don't need a new certificate. If you do want to use a new name for external connections, then you would need a new cert.
