Domain Migration

We are performing a domain migration. The main reason is our domain name is invalid and causes a lot of issues being it has an underscore in it and we are upgrading from 2000 to 2003 DC's so it seemed the perfect time to change the domain name to something better and upgrade at the same time.

All is working well however I ran into a snag with our Exchange 2003 server. Currently it works fine in our 2000 environment and works pretty good in our 2003 environment. The snag is when a user gets migrated using ADMT3 and they log in first thing they do is check their email. Now we haven't actually migrated anything yet except in our test environment and we only have 1 Exchange server. When I went to check my test account it prompts me for the username/pass of the old domain which still exists for now.

My question would be has anyone done this?

Is there a way to have it recognize the credentials from both domains at the same time?

What would happen if I disjoined our Exchange server from the old domain and re-joined it to the new domain?

What would happen if I simply migrated the server as if it was a workstation?

Only mention of exchange servers for this process is migrating from Exchange 5.5 to 2003 which we are not doing and I am finding it hard to find anything on an existing Exchange 2003 server in a 2000-2003 migration.

Any thoughts or ideas... what I am looking at is having the users put in the old credentials and click the remember check box for now but I would like to know what to expect when the old domain dissappears.

When you used ADMT, did you migrate passwords too? Do you still have the two way trust enabled?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Yes the 2 way trust is still in place and yes the password migration works as well.

I am leery of just moving Exchange to the new domain without knowing the consequences as it seems there is little information on an existing 2003 Exchange server being migrated with the rest of the domain.

I have done the security translation on the Exchange server since posting and it still does it. Basically when we log in to the new domain and goto check email it prompts for user/pass and works when we put the olddomain\user as the username.

To move Exchange across a domain, uninstall Exchange, change domains and reinstall Exchange. You'll need to backup beforehand and restore afterwards.

This is not an easy task!!
