Domain for SharePoint

Does SharePoint need a separate domain for SharePoint sites?
The speculation behind the separate domain it is required so that all ALL email to the domain can be sent to the SharePoint server.

So if our domain is domain.com, the SharePoint domain would be something like sharepoint.domain.com

I personally do not think it is necessary, but I am not a SharePoint admin. I will appreciate any input..

Another question is whether being in a different AD forest has any bearing on this ?

From my reading, just a separate AD domain is not a security barrier but a separate forest and domain is...

So separate forest then separate domain ?

DMZ ISP (if Domain hosted) INTERNAL
ex company.com company.com company.local

Will this still work with internal exchange server domain ?
