I cannot get an XP Pro laptop to join a small Win 2000 domain and it’s driving me mad!

For brevity, I’ll bullet point what is happening now;

Domain Controller is Win 2000 Server
Other PC is Win 2000 Pro
All attached to a Linksys cable router
Static IP on allNamed DNS on all (DNS server is on DC)Server and w/station communicate and share files no problem
All can access Internet
Can ping server and w/s from xp laptop using IP and Computer name
Netbios is enabled on xp
ICF is disabledIEEE 802.1 X is unchecked
There is a user & computer account in servers Active Directory

I have checked and there are ldap records for all in dns, if this is a SRV error and it still appears
It could be how could I fix it, I have read page after page of help files but I cannot understand them.

I’ve tried to change Name and Network ID but I keep getting error message saying there is no domain.

I am baffled.

Can anyone HELP !!!

No such luck!

The DNS server is on the dc, but I cannot resolve this and wherever I read help files I find know answers

A little reading here might help I hope:
It is likely a DNS issue on your client. Use Device Manager, locate the adapter, Properties, TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, WINS tab, and enable Netbios over TCP/IP and disable LMHOSTS lookup. Then click the DNS tab and enter only the IP of your DNS server.

Start, Run, cmd

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

You should then be able to find and join the domain.

If you have made repeated efforts to join, make certain that:

1. Your IP is not in use elsewhere if static;
2. You have a unique SID for that installation of XP
3. There are no connectivity issues
4. Helps often: at the server remove the computer name registration, and the user registration. The add back both. Then try to join the domain from the client.

Tips from bcastner dit work?

some questions?

The domain and the dc are working properly,
this is the only computer who is not joining?

perhaps allready done? but:
When trying to join do you entre a netbios name of the full domain name?

try frist the netbios name if you did not already, worked for me:

some question when you make the xp a member the work group can you use shared folders on the server?

did you test het dns server?

dit you run nslookup?

dit you try a fixed ip?

Here some faq's wicht maight be usefull

'The network location cannot be reached' or 'Network path not found' when
using the FQDN to join a domain

and: the reverse situation:

I do appreciate you comments guys but I still can't crack it! This is the message I am getting, my dc is named olympic and my domain is cuba-libras

I read a the white papers which were helpful but I don't understand why it is saying the domain doesn't exist etc when my 2000 workstation communicates no problem, so surely that is requesting the SRV and A and resolves it ok.

The error message I get is this:

the query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.CUBA-LIBRAS

The following domain controllers were identified by the query:

olympic.cuba-libras

Common causes of this error include:

- Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.

- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.

If I ever get to the bottom of this I've a feeling I'll never forget it!!!
