Yes as you can tell I am very new to FreeBSD and UNIX. In a Windows environment there is a domain controller. Is there a similar beast for FreeBSD or UNIX as a whole? If so can someone point me in the direction of a resource that would describe this process. If not, is there a reason why this is not required?

yes you can create a server similar to a DC in w2k. Check out Samba, samba.org. You can install it from the ports collection and configure it by editing the smb.conf file. The config file is well commented to, with examples.

Good luck.
