I just received two laptops that I want to add to my company's network. Each time I put in the domain name I receive this messsage: Domain controller for xyz.com could not be contacted. Any suggestions on how to combat this problem.

I am using windows xp professional on the laptops. The server is windows 2000.

Are you using Static Ip's or DHCP?

Are you at the same site as the DC?

It is static IP. No I am not the same site as the DC.

Are connected via WAN?

Is there a Dc at your site?

If you are connected via a WAN or any other slow connection, you will have problems joining the domain.

The easiest way I know to join the domain is with a LMHOST file pointing to you DC. Right now your Laptop does not know how to find it and is probably timing out while it searches your Network for the server.

Create an LMHOST file with your domain identified in it, once you have joined the domain you can delete the LMHOST file and continue to function with DNS.

I have had to do this at one of our remote sites.
