Domain Controller migration question.

I am assuming this is a simple question but...

I have 3 domain controllers. Windows 2003 servers. 2 share FISMO roles.

The hardware on the first controller is old and I want to migrate it to new hardware the easiest way possible. The new server will retain the same name, IP address, DNS server, etc just newer hardware.

Are these the correct steps to take or is there a better solution?

1) DCPROMO on third controller and move FISMO roles to it.
2) Demote old machine.
3) Rebuild new hardware, name it the same as the original machine and give it same address.
4) Run DCPROMO and bring back original FISMO roles.

Do I need to worry about the Global catalog at all? Is this the simplest way or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

You stated that you have 3 DC's so step 1: is already done except moving the FSMO roles to the 3rd DC

You must Demote the server and the remove it completely from the domain by adding it to a workgroup. This way the Computer account is deleted out of AD.

You will then need to replicate your whole environment. I would wait 24 hours before trying to build new server with the old DC name. Verify the name is completely out of AD even check your ADSIedit and see if the name is still in AD. Also need to check your DNS and make sure the name is completely gone.

The GC should be on one of your DC's so you shouldnt have to worry about it, but check your Sites and Services to make sure.

Thanks!

Question about the the GC. You said to check Sites and Services but I'm not sure what I am looking for to see if the other servers have a GC?

Thanks again.
