A standalone server in NT4, can this be promoted to a domain controller, or does it mean a total reinstall

if it can how do you do it

Re-install I am afraid - no other way about it!

Thanks, thought as much

Go to Start, Programs, Administative Tools (Common), click Server Manager, click on your computer name, click menu item "Computer" click "Promote to Primary Domain Controller"

lennybratcher,
The only way to promote a server to a primary domain controller is if it was a Backup Domain Controller. To get a member server to be a domain controller, you must install it as one.

About two years ago I came across an application that claimed to be able to promote a machine without re-installing the OS. I believe the name was UPromote. I never used it, though.
