We get an error message when logging in "domain controller for your domain cannot be contacted". It attaches but doesn't completely log in. There is a domain controller and other computers can see it.
We were wondering if it may be the network card, or software problem?

Check the domain name defined in the computer's identification (rt-click Net. Neighborhood - Properties, or My Computer in W2000) and make sure it's right.

Also check the IP addresses and Subnet mask.

If all of that is right, make sure you're connected to the network (cabling, etc.).

Make sure your client is set correctly for WINS resolution. The client software will use WINS settings to initially locate a domain controller. If it is not set for WINS, or not set properly, many times it won't find the domain controller - especially if the DC happens to be on a different subnet.

If you're not using WINS, you'll probably need to make an entry in the LMHOSTS file, using the #PRE and #DOM options.

We are using both WINS and DNS. The settings look right. We are running NT 4.0, while the server we can't always connect to is running Windows 2000.
Also the problem is intermittant, sometimes logging in with a different account sometimes works. Running netstat, nbseesion shows 'wait' next to theTCP/IP connection.
Could this be due to incompatability bewtween NT 4.0 and 2000?

if all the settings look right. try reseating the network card. youd be supprised at how often this works.

You may want to look at the specific NT client or 98 client. Supposedly there was a new client that shipped with NT 2000 (Gagg) and this was suppose to be installed on all the workstations etc. keep in mind that if you have any unix or novell boxes that this new client has NO cross platform support so you are at the whim of MicrCrap once again.
