Domain and UserID will not allow enough characters

I have a win98 machine client logging into work through cisco VPN tunnel. I connect to the work server fine but when I attempt to access the servers I receive a prompt for to enter network password which I do but it says it is incorrect. I think it needs domain\userID, however, the domain and current userID will not fit in the amount of chacters that it allows you to type in. For example my domain/userID is 15 characters, but win98 will only allow me to type in 13. Is there a way to expand the field or a way to work around this so that I can see the servers?
