We've recently had to change the domain Administrator password in 1 domain. Setup is as follows:

SRV1 - PDC, File and Print Sharing
SRV2 - BDC, Exchange 5.5 Standard
SRV3 - Member server, file and print sharing

We did the ctrl+alt+del on the PDC, and selected "Change Password" and changed it there. Then went to the BDC and changed the password on the Exchange services as well.

Now however, we cannot log in using the new, or old password. SRV3 however still uses the old password.

I've rebooted the Exchange server (had to log in as me!), however I don't really want to reboot the PDC just in case all hell breaks loose.

Is there a "proper" procedure for changing the password, and does anyone know what's gone wrong this time?

Any help appreciated.

Don't know the 'proper' procedure - but seems to me that all the servers should be logged on with the same account anyway - Domain Administrator - so you only needed to change the Administrators password on the PDC in User Manager for Domains. What might have happened is that you changed different passwords for different servers(?) Anyway just change the main admin account on the PDC User Manager for Domains, then reboot the BDC and you should be able to log on as the administrator with the new password.

You should then check any services using the admin account to start up and change the password there respectively (you should really do a list of these before changing anything anyway).

Good luck!

One recommendation after you change admin passwords you should replicate the domain to do this..
Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Server Manager > Click on the PDC server the go Computer > Synchronize Entire Domain

This should help.. NT sometimes does not replicate right away the changes to passwordss. rights to the BDC and it causes problems.
