I seem to be doing well with SuSE so far, I've got it hooked up to my network (although more needs to be done) I can ping the other computers on the network and the SuSE box and external web sites.

What I am having problems with is accessing the web using Konqueror? How can set it up to access the web when it is on a network and going through a router? All I have done on the Win2k machines is set the gateway to the IP of the router and that's it done.

Thanks in advance. Tezdread

Do you have the DNS set up properly? Without it, you should still be able to go to websites through IP. If you can, then you need to look at DNS settings...

Thanks for your help! It is the DNS as I can get to the web site by specifying the IP address only.

How can I setup DNS so I can use the normal URL? (please take into account that I am new to Linux so full explanation might be needed)

Add the IPs of your DNS servers to the /etc/resolv.conf file like this...

# Primary DNS Server
nameserver 1.2.3.4
# Secondary DNS Server
nameserver 5.6.7.8

Chris, I tried what you suggested but this hasn't got it working. This might be my lack of knowledge or my setup, as I've put the network together without a great deal of knowledge about all that is involved.

My computer that is connected to the internet is running e-smith Server/Gateway, which is a cut down version of RedHat. I have checked the config of this and it says the DNS Server is 192.168.1.100. This is the internal IP of this e-smith system.

While typing this message I had another idea as I saw what port is used for the proxy. I specified the IP of the e-smith gateway and the correct port in konqueror and this has worked! (so far)

Thanks for your help with this Chris. Tezdread

You need to put the IPs of DNS servers that can resolve names on the internet in the /etc/resolv.conf file. This is usually your ISP's DNS servers.

Just been in contact with my cable ISP and after entering the primary & secondary details I still couldn't connect using the URL?

I will have to stick with using proxy settings in Konqueror for now. When I have more knowledge of SuSE I am hoping to remove the e-smith server and replace it with SuSE so I guess this is when I will really need to sort out this issue.

What's your opinion on using SuSE as the Server/Router? I would want to run FTP from it and also host one or two personal web sites either using Bind (I believe this is right?)or a free service like DYNDNS. I would also need to share the drives over my internal network and it must be secure. The system would be a P3 450, 256/512mb RAM. Tezdread

Can you ping any outside hosts?

ping -c2

Any distro of Linux will do what you need it to. I prefer Red Hat. BIND is a DNS server and DynDNS is a dynamic DNS service that you can pay for if your IP address changes. To host a website, you need to run Apache --> For FTP, I would recommend ProFTPd -->
