I will be doing an upgrade of my Win2000 server to 2003. On it I have installed my MySQL server with all my Databases. I will be doing a full clean install of the new OS completely wiping the drives of all data. I will be making a full tape backup of all the data including the MySQL directory.

So my question is, what is the best way of preparing to make this transition. Can I just restore the backup then reinstall MySQL into the same directory and have it work? Should I reinstall MySQL then restore the backup?

Thanks

I would use mysqldump to back an exported backup, then just backup the data directory. Either should be able to get you back to production, but having both is insurance.
