Hello..
Got a tricky problem for you guys. I want to treat type and lines to get it looking grungy. Now, when I did the sketches in Photoshop it was easy, but applying this to vector lines in Illustrator I really don't know what the easiest way is.
This is being done for a business card, which needs to be printed with only Spot colors, so no four-color process! Have a look-see how it looks straight from Photoshop at
Thanks

Hi there, as I've mentioned before I'm probably not the best person to answer this question but since no-one else has answered....

First of all I'm not exactly sure why you need to do this in Illustrator when you already have a good result in Photoshop but just assuming I'm missing something all I can suggest to achieve this in Illustrator is this:

The text is no problem. I have seen many, many free fonts on the web that are similar to that. Just spend a little time going through some web sites...try searching for 'free fonts' and include words like 'grunge' 'punk' 'scratch' things like that...I'm sure I have a font just like that at work and it has a name with the word punk in it, I can check in a couple of days.

For the lines I can think of a few choices:
The easy way: If you have Adobe Streamline or Corel Trace or a similar program you can just convert those Photoshop lines into vectors (same goes for type if you cant find a nice font).

Alternatively you can use Photoshop to create the vectors by making selections from the lines then converting the selections to paths then saving as Illustrator files. To get the best results I would draw the lines in Photoshop at a very big size so when you make a selection and then path from them you will get a more accurate vector outline (dont forget to set the Tolerance settings for the convert to path very low for most accurate path).

Last but not least I'm sure there will be a filter available for Illustrator that can acheive this effect but I don't really use many Illustrator filters so I can't really advise, maybe someone esle knows of one. As always a good search of the web will almost always find a solution if you have the time and patience.

Good luck, by the way...the business card looks great!

First, create outlines from your text. Then go into Filter->Distort->Roughen. Turn the size to zero and play with the detail til you have a good number of extra points. Then have fun with punk and bloat.
