Just recently I downloaded the new free AVG 7.0, ever since the hard drive has not spun-down, things seem to be working good, with some minor hangups, nothing that is a problem though, my question: would it hurt the drive not to spin-down, the moniter does power-down like regular and I do shut-down at night, this just bothers me as it always spun-down before I got AVG, I also DLL "Spyware S&D" and "Ad-aware SE," a few days earlier, but the drive spun-down then no problem, Just after installing AVG... Honestly, not to sure if I need a virusscanner, I run S&D, Adaware, delete cache, do a thourogh scandisk and then de-frag every week, I don't surf much, have the google toolbar, am extra careful with email, I'd think an online scanner will suffice, but what do you guys think?????

Take Care all

hi;
"Does this hurt the Hard disk"
no , not really at all - it spins down when you shutdown though right? - it's just the power management settings....right?

Try disabling "Automatic/Scheduled updates" in AVG and see if there are entries in the "Scheduled Tasks folder for it, and disable those tasks

I would suggest that it is probably better for the drive to not spin down.
I base my opinions on manufacturers' statistics regarding the mean time between failure in hours, and the estimated maximum number of startup cycles the drive can withstand.

You would have to visit the manufacturer's website for your particular drive to see the statistics, but generally it seems far less damaging to leave a drive spinning for the whole duration of the computer's 'on' session than to repeatedly subject it to regular stop/start cycles.

There will be an optimum balance of these two methods, of course......

Regards, Andy.
