I want to know about the value of certifications such as:

CCNA, MCSE etc.

Are they really helpful in boosting the career prospects?

I think they are helpful. But I think it really depends on your level of experience also. If you have been doing high level admin work for a long time for a few different companies, maybe a cert wouldn't be as valuable to a kid coming straight outta school with nothing but a theory of education.

It also can boost your chances of finding work, because certs are industry wide and respected. Especially depends on what certs you have too.

I heard that clearing one paper from MCSE electives, certifies one for MCP.
Now, what is the advantage of MCP?
I actually want to have a Database Administration Certification, but confused as for what to go for, MCDBA or Oracle DBA.

I would go for the Oracle if you are doing it for an employment perspective. They are in high demand.
What do you use more, Oracle or MS. Go with what you will use if you are doing it for yourself...

Which one is most valuable? That depends on what you are doing. If you are a System Admin working with lots of routing issues then CCNA/CCNE is best. If you are a System Admin dealing with mainly Microsoft OS's Then MCP/MCSA/MCSE is best. Dealing with databases, having a certification in this also depends on what type of DB you are dealing with. If you are dealing mainly with Oracle then getting MS certified is not the best bet and the reverse is true as well. Go with the certification that best fits your CURRENT job description. Then when you have time to something else then go with something you are interested in working with. In my opinion getting certified in something you don't work with or don't know much about is a waste of money unless you know for sure it will be something other than resume fodder.

As always, Butch is right on target...

Don't just get a cert.

Plan your career (even at a high level) and see what certs will help you get there. Then do it.

And, of course, stay away from brain dumps, try to build your own test lab and do some sort of hands-on...

Good Luck!!
