Does the MM with the Exchange back end need an Outlook addon?

Need" not really. It depends on what functionality you want on the subscriber's desktop to have. You can use WSO (web subscriber options) to do alot of what the client has. But if you want a pretty wrapper for the voicemails in the Outlook client, then the MM client is that way to go. If that's not needed, then you don't need to use the client.
