Could somebody please explain to me why you need the remote agent and does it actually speed up backing up a remote server, Or even do you really need it.

Also do you get a licence with it when you buy backup exec or is totally seperate?

Any answers greatfully appreciated.

Yes - remote agent speeds up the backup

Without the remote agent the data between the remote server and the media server transfers something like this:

Remote server = send block
Media server = receive block, media server replies with acknowledgement.
remote server --#-->
<--#-- media server

With the remote agent its something like this:

Remote server = send block, send block, send block, send end of transfer.

Media server = receive block, receive block, receive block, reply with acknowledged end of transfer.
remote server #-#-#>
<--#-- media server

Also - without the remote agent you are unable to back up a remote servers sytem state (which includes the registry, system boot files & a few other things).
