I need to purchase software to create pdf's and was going to buy Adobe Acrobat, but I have the opportunity to purchase PageMaker at a great price. I currently use Microsoft Publisher for making newsletters, brochures, etc., but I'm assuming PageMaker would be a better choice. I guess I really have 2 questions. 1. Does PageMaker provide the same capability for creating pdf's as Adobe Acrobat? 2. Is PageMaker a better alternative for brochures, etc. than Microsoft Publisher? Thanks for your help!

DjGolds: PageMaker has the integrated "Export to PDF"
This is a comfortable application of Adobe Acrobat Distiller.
Though many people say, it´s better to convert first to PostScript
and then to apply the Distiller, I found not the least difficulties,
using "Export to PDF" . I export always "for Version3.0" because
this is understood by old and new Acrobat Readers
(may be the code is slightly smaller for newer versions).
I avoid ANY WindowBill program - everything highly
unreliable, compared to Adobe programs.
A collection of PDFs, including documents with hyperlinks, is here:
Any message about misfunctions is appreciated very much.

Hi,

If you purchase the latest version of Pagemaker, Acrobat 5 and distiller 5 are included with the programm. By the way, Pagemaker uses the distiller to create pdf's.

The difference between Pagemaker and Microsoft Publisher is in the greater layout possibilities in Pagemaker.

Rshiatt: the size of any PDF which contains images depends mainly
on the size of the images and the compression mode. The pure text
and vector graphics may be packed more economically by other
methods than Export to PDF for 3.0.
But usually, text and vector elements contribute very little to the file
size (if no fonts are embedded).
There is no newer compression method available which creates much
smaller files for the SAME quality.
Normally not the Writer is used but the Distiller. In fact I don´t know
the Writer, but in the Adobe Forums it turned out, that either Export
to PDF or Write as PostScript and Distill Later should be used.

Hey DJ. I just discovered (with a little help from friends here and at the Adobe site) something very essential about Pagemaker and PDF's. If the quality of the graphics in your documents is important, DO NOT use the Export to PDF option -- save your Pagemaker document as a postscript file (through the Options in Print ), and THEN use Acrobat Distiller (as indicated above, part of your Pagemaker package) to save it to PDF. For some reason, the integrity of graphics is much, much improved in this two-step process, as opposed to the more direct Export to PDF method.
