DOES NT NEED DEFRAGGED??

When taking an A+ certification training class, I was told that defragging an NT server does nothing and is a waste of time. However, other people have told me that it will greatly improve the performance of the network. What are everyone's thoughts/experiences with this?

I downloaded diskeeper lite and it told me the drive was 37% fragmented. If this is accurate, I would think that a defrag would help out tremendously. Has anyone used diskeeper lite on their NT 4.0 server? What are the drawbacks to using the freeware as opposed to the full version of Diskeeper?

A server works on the same principle as a workstation. If deleting temp files and performing regular housekeeping on your workstation helps your workstation function better, your server should also benifit from the same treatment

What you have to consider is that if a file is split into two and the two parts are at seperate ends of the disk, the server will take longer to open the file. Maybe not much longer, but if you have a lot of files like this ...... "It's true, its damn true!"

I have loaded Diskeeper 5 for Servers and run it once a month.....I also run a utility called page defrag to defrag the paging file. This software (page file)is free and runs on boot.
Diskeeper has something similiar in it (the full version) to do a page defrag but I like the free one better.

I also use Diskeeper 5.0. It seems to work very well on our servers.
