Hi We are using digital unix 4.0d version. We are doing backup of the oracle databases using tar. There are more larger files on one DLT tape - 6 files and each of them is cca 3GB large. I can list the tape using tar -tv without problems. Last week I tried to restore one 3gb file from tape using tar xv command. I get the error - file does not look like a tar archive. Because the file are large I think I have to change some system parameter...

..
Has the tar archive been written to more than 1 tape archive? ie; use the 'mt' command to rewund the tape and then try your tar xv. Now us 'mt fsf' to move the tape onto the next archive and re-try the tar xv...

If this fails then make sure the tar is rewound and using the 'pax' command to restore the archive (see the pax man page)..

Regards..
