Hi All

I'm not really very pc literate so I apologize in advance if I am asking a stupid question here or missing the obvious.

Due to a really bad virus/trojan attack I was recently forced to reinstall windows on my system. My system is second hand and came to me with “WIN XP Pro” on board and unfortunately I managed somehow to misplace the disks I was given with it, so I was forced to buy a new OS and I bought “Win XP Home Edition with SP2.”

With help from a friend I seem to have managed to install the new Windows, but before I go on the net to “activate” it or register it, I obviously wanted to get my “Norton 2005” back up and running. (Also until I have my Norton back, I can’t check to make sure that the viruses are really gone.)

Problem is though that my Norton will not install and it gives me no error message code or other explanation, it simply says;

“Setup Error”
“Norton Antivirus 2005 installation has failed. Do you want to try to install again?”
“Retry / Cancel”

Retrying produces the same results and if I cancel it thinks about it for a while and then tells me that “Uninstall has failed” at which point I click “abort.”

After surfing the net for solutions (on another machine) I was not able to find anything which sounded exactly like my problem, but I did find something about installing from the hard disk instead of the cd, so I tried that but sadly with the same result.

I made a note of what it is doing when it stops, just in case this is pertinent. While “installing components” it stops at;

“RB_version control. BC731320_557D_4E8F_8CED_C…”

I also installed a couple of things on the computer to make sure that I could actually install anything on it. Both BT Broadband and a game installed on there with no problems at all.

My Norton 2005 cover is current and I only used the cd once back when I originally bought the PC. As far as I can tell there is no damage on the cd….. I can’t think of anything else.

Can anyone help me sort this out?

All the best
Badger

You may want to download and run this cleanup tool from Symantec, then try to reinstall it.

Thank's for the tip bygeek, I'll give it a go.
